Filipino stimulus package

Since we’re in a recession I did my part to stimulate the world economy. Instead of buying 3 pieces of chicken from Jollibee, I bought 3 buckets. Don’t worry I have your back, World.

$35 dollars for 18 pieces of Jollibee is equal to:

-4 full tanks of gas for an old lawn mower.
-2 acres worth of soil-dwelling common bacteria.
-the life of a spoiled brat.
-100 eBay postings.
-one millionth of my love for the Earth.

Tomorrow i’ll fight global warming by throwing vast amounts of free ice from the local McDonald’s and throwing it up into the atmosphere.

Merienda time with ube and latik

Boholano latik

Ube (purple yam) can be found in your local Asian market, unless of course you live in South Dakota or Russia where you’ll have to get a plane ticket to get to the nearest vegetable that’s even purple.

Latik however is a different story. The applications and methods for latik themselves can vary from province to province. To obtain what I call Latik Boholano you have to commence with the following steps:

1) Google the words, “how to make Boholano latik.”
2) After realizing you won’t find anything, read step number 3.
3) Pray to the spirit in charge of blessing people with latik: The Latik Wak-Wak.
4) After a few days of prayer she will drench your head with coconut milk.

After that I have no idea what to do, my aunt makes the latik for me. Don’t forget to say “amen” after praying to the Latik spirit. It’s like saying “bye, see ya” but to an omnipotent God. If you don’t say “amen,” the Latik spirit will just sit there. Watching you.

Or, you can grab a coconut and grate the meat, squeeze the milk out, place over medium heat with 1 part brown sugar, 2 parts fresh coconut milk, and keep stiring until thick, sticky, and down to a diabetic-inducing golden brown. Heysus-maria-hosep!

A Filipino family tested by an obsolete world

Jay Mercado and Shirley Tan - From Manny Crisostomo / Sacbee.com

Jay Mercado and Shirley Tan have been together for 23 years and have twin 12-year-old boys. But in the eyes of American law, Shirley Tan must be deported back to the Philippines, mainly because her marriage with US citizen Jay Mercado is invalid. Why? Because Jay is female.

“If Mercado, a U.S. citizen, were a man, she could sponsor Tan for legal permanent residency, their lawyer said. But because federal law limits the definition of marriage to a man and a woman, the couple has no such option.”

They are casualties in our world’s ongoing conflict between traditional sentiment and civil rights, and living testaments to a family’s tenacity during hard times. Whether immigrant or citizen, we know full well that a family regardless of culture, race, or even a parent’s sexual orientation, must always try to stay together.

What I really wanted to know was what they were going to do if she would be deported and I wasn’t surprised to find that they would move to the Philippines together. A few months ago a family I know decided to move to the Philippines when it was found that my uncle had to be deported. Family transcends nationality, economics, and in this case, ‘gender.’

Despite Shirley’s reasons upon leaving the Philippines in 1989, we can only hope that whether they live in the Philippines or stay in the United States, they will be seen as great examples of a cohesive family today and pioneers by our grand children in the near future.

Deep Foundation’s “Children of the Sun”

Deep Foundation does it again. It isn’t hard to find Filipino artists in foreign countries, regardless of genre, canvas, and outlet, who are in-tune with their motherland. Filipino rappers are definitely a group of artists who are in active pursuit and promotion of their “foundations” regardless of where they are living today.

I spent the first 5 minutes rewinding the beginning. Nothing takes me back like a rooster’s crows. ERR-EH-ERR-ERRRRR! That reminds me, American roosters say COCK-A-DOODLE-DOOOO!

Watch DP’s “A Place Called Home” for added homeland appreciation. It samples Freddie Aguilar’s instrumental to his Asian hit song, “Anak.”

Filipeanut is killed in squabble with local gang

THIS JUST IN.

Cagayan De Oro, Phil - In an honorable but futile attempt to save the lives of endangered clown fish off Camiguin island, Filipeanut was attacked by a group of savage dolphins heading toward Borneo. The Bottle-Nosed Bugoys (or BNG) were bar hopping south for the winter when they found Filipeanut on the beach performing CPR on 2 of the fish.

One witness was able to catch the tragic event on her Nokia 6900, a new phone that carries Smart and Globe sim cards and is AT&T and T-Mobile ready. The phone also comes standard with a one megapixel camera, a DVD player, and comes in 2 colors: the 3gb phone in pink and the 3.2gb in tangerine.
